Awards selected by kinesiology faculty

The following awards are selected by faculty or groups. No application is needed.

SHAPE America Major of the Year Award

Purpose: The SHAPE America Major of the Year Award celebrates outstanding undergraduate students in the fields of health, physical education, recreation, and dance.

Qualifications:

  1. Be a current SHAPE America Member (nominees who are not yet members may still be nominated as long as a membership form is submitted within one month of nomination).
  2. Be on track toward a degree in an HPERD field.
  3. Be a junior or senior.
  4. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of application.
  5. Provide a service to school or community (3-5 contributions) for a minimum of two years during undergraduate career.

Winifred Tilden High Scholar Award

Purpose: To recognize outstanding academic achievement by undergraduate students within the Department of Kinesiology

Procedure: Given each spring to the department majors who have completed at least 24 credits at Iowa State with a cumulative GPA of 4.00

Barbara E. Forker Leadership Award

Purpose: To recognize students in the Department of Kinesiology who have contributed leadership and service to their profession. One award given to each of the following career options: A TR, CPH, PHP, Ex Sci, PAHP and PETE.

Qualifications:

  1. Student must have a minimum of 70 credits and a cumulative GPA of 2.8.
  2. Student must show professional involvement and leadership skills through any or all of the following:
  • Involvement in departmental clubs through membership and leadership roles
  • Willingness to take on and complete given responsibilities
  • Ability to get people involved and/or to think (a catalyst as well as a worker)
  • Ability to think/plan ahead with regard to plans that affect the present as well as the future
  • Ability to generate and share ideas
  • Having organizational and time management skills
  • Possession of the interpersonal skills needed to do the above

Procedure: Given to the student who exhibits the strongest leadership within each academic option of Kinesiology.

Seniors of Service Award

Purpose: To recognize graduating seniors who significantly contribute to the daily working of Iowa State dance organizations

Qualifications: A graduating senior who has been an unsung hero of one of the campus dance organizations 

Tap ISU Leadership Award

Purpose: To recognize the work of a class leader and choreographer in Tap ISU who has contributed to the success of group performance

Qualifications: A member of the ISU Tap Club

Germaine G. Guiot Outstanding Senior Award (Female)

Purpose: To recognize the most outstanding female senior enrolled in Kinesiology and Health or Athletic Training.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum GPA of 3.25 cumulative.
  2. Must be a major in Kinesiology and Health .
  3. Must be graduating in the calendar year of the award.
  4. Must have made outstanding contributions to the Kinesiology and Health or Athletic Training curriculum through some/all of the following activities:
  • Professional volunteer/work experiences
  • Membership and active role in departmental clubs
  • Membership, attendance, and contribution to professional organizations, workshops, and meetings
  • Involvement as student rep on department, college, or university committees.

Harry Schmidt Outstanding Senior Award (Male)

Purpose: To recognize the most outstanding male senior enrolled in Kinesiology and Health or Athletic Training.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum GPA of 3.25 cumulative.
  2. Must be a major in Kinesiology and Health .
  3. Must be graduating in the calendar year of the award.
  4. Must have made outstanding contributions to the Kinesiology and Health or Athletic Training curriculum through some/all of the following activities:
  • Professional volunteer/work experiences.
  • Membership and active role in departmental clubs.
  • Membership, attendance and contribution to professional organizations, workshops, and meetings.
  • Involvement as student rep on department, college or university committees.

Anna R. Toman Dance Award

Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate student (member of Orchesis I) who has contributed significantly during the year to the dance program at Iowa State.

Qualifications:

  1. Must have a formal affiliation with Iowa State University.
  2. Must be a member in good standing of Orchesis I.

Charlotte Wilkinson Memorial Award

Purpose: To honor the memory of Charlotte Wilkinson, a past member of Orchesis II. Given to the member who has contributed the most in organization, choreography and performance.

Qualifications:

  1. Must be affiliated with Iowa State University.
  2. Must be a member of Orchesis II and in good standing.

Betty Toman Outstanding Contributions to Dance and the Affiliated Arts Award

Purpose: To recognize a dance student who has been involved in numerous dance organizations and who accepts/completes tasks beyond expectations to further dance on campus and in the community.

Qualifications:

  1. Depth of involvement in dance classes, membership in Orchesis I & II, Iowa State Dance Tour Company, Stars Over VEISHEA, as a choreographer or in support activities such as lighting, costuming, or marketing. Effectiveness in involvement in dance and related activities.
  2. Length of involvement in dance groups and activities.

Evelyn Jensen Award for Achievement in Outreach

Purpose: To recognize a member of the Iowa State Dance Tour Company who demonstrates the ability to transmit dance knowledge and skill to a variety of people through performance and teaching.

Qualifications:

  1. Member of the Iowa State Dance Tour Company.

ISU Dance Performing Arts Scholarship

Purpose: To recognize a student in the Performing Arts major (dance emphasis) who has contributed to the ISU Dance program.

Qualifications:

  1. Must be at least sophomore classification and a major in Performing Arts with a dance emphasis.
  2. Must be a contributing member to the ISU Dance program for at least one year.
