Goal four

We endeavor to maintain steady enrollment in both the undergraduate and graduate programs, balancing student numbers with resources available to support a quality education. In addition we strive to attain a high caliber and diverse student, faculty and staff population.

Objective 1: Expand recruitment activities that target excellent students, faculty and staff

Targeted efforts at recruitment will result in increased quality and diversity of students, faculty and staff.


  • Utilize programs that bring quality prospective undergraduate students to campus, enhance plans that improve "transferability" of students, and provide non-kinesiology ISU students with information regarding kinesiology programs.
  • Recruit high-quality Master's students by competitive stipends, recruiting from quality institutions (targeting ISU and Midwestern colleges).
  • Recruit high-quality doctoral applicants by providing competitive stipends, employing active recruitment strategies and highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of our program to colleagues.
  • Recruit talented faculty and staff with demonstrated expertise and/or potential for excellence.
  • Improve the use of the Department of Kinesiology website and publication materials to more effectively advertise programs, research laboratories and career opportunities in the discipline of kinesiology and health.

Objective 2: Improve retention of students, faculty and staff

Attention aimed at retention of students, faculty and staff will enhance stability and effectiveness of departmental programming and address University goals for retention.


  • Strengthen connection with new students through early career information, introduction of faculty and enhancement of learning community/peer mentor programming.
  • Strengthen connections with current students by providing research opportunities, independent study, ISU Honors Program and Undergraduate Research Assistantship opportunities, service learning and pre-internship activities.
  • Foster a sense of community, especially at-risk groups.
  • Maintain competitive salaries, support and facilities for professional development for faculty and staff.

Objective 3: Increase international, multicultural and other under represented groups

Recruiting and retaining faculty, staff and students who bring multicultural and international perspectives to our programs, enrich our learning and working environments.


  • Increase contact with prospective underrepresented students with mailings, special events and recruitment activities (eg. McNair program, Upward Bound, GWC summer internship program, working with CHS Multicultural Liaison Officer, Graduate Minority Assistantship Program).
  • Increase recruitment of international students by utilizing services available within the University (eg. ISU Study Abroad office, Graduate College programs, CHS International Programs Coordination).
  • Pursue and provide funds working with the College development officer to increase multicultural student awards and scholarships.
  • Develop international exchange programs with other universities to provide opportunities for graduate students.
  • Proactively recruit faculty and staff of underrepresented groups through personal contacts and University diversity initiatives.
