I was responsible for...
I worked strictly as a part of the CardioRACE project during my internship. About half of my time was spent interacting with participants in the project. This involved many things like conducting 1 rep max tests, teaching form, teaching stretches, conducting aerobic tests, and VO2max treadmill tests. The other half of my time was spent entering data and sending participants reports on their progress in the lab.
During my internship, I actually got invited back to work full time as a Research Associate in the lab!
The greatest thing I learned was how creating bonds with people can change their life. CardioRACE is an insanely welcoming environment for our participants because we want them to feel appreciated and they are. I enjoyed getting to know all of them and they really enjoyed getting to know us, the younger generation. After most graduate from the program, they often feel sad they have to leave us behind but are thrilled with how much we have changed their life in just one year. It is a really good feeling to know that the work you put in and the simple everyday conversations you have, have such a positive impact on someone.
Advice for others...
My advice would be to just go with your gut on what you want to do for a career. I was really indecisive on what I wanted to do with my internship, let alone my whole career. I always had an interest in the research process but wasn't 100% on getting a job in research. Finally, I just applied to Dr. Lee's lab and now I love what I do.
