I was responsible for...
Assist with patient equipment set up, EKG hook up and monitoring of Telemetry equipment, observe patient orientations and evaluations, make various educational PowerPoints including topics such as exercise versus activities of daily living, how to exercise safely in the heat and heart healthy dieting and clean equipment. I was also given the opportunity to go to St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI to observe heart caths, a bypass surgery and take an EKG reading course.
Towards the end of my internship, I was allowed to administer 6 minute walk tests as well as do annual evaluations on Phase III patients. One patient that I was doing an annual eval on increased his treadmill stress test by 40 seconds, as well as increased his number of sit-to-stands in 30 seconds and number of bicep curls completed in 30 seconds. Seeing a patient get stronger and how much joy is on their face when they see their results makes those early 7 am shifts worth it!
The most important thing I learned throughout my internship was how to trust myself and my education.
Advice for others...
I know you've probably heard this a bunch, but take every opportunity you can to learn. The people at your internship site will be experienced and excited to share their knowledge, so let them.I had a great education at Iowa State and I learned alot throughout my internship experience.
