I was responsible for...
I was responsible for participating in phase II cardiac rehab and helping in the Medically Oriented gym. While in cardiac rehab I was responsible for attaching all our patients up to a 3 lead EKG monitor, leading them in stretches, and taking their blood pressure before during and after their exercise prescription. As for my responsibilities for the Medically Oriented Gym I was in charge of teaching the Fit 4 Life classes and taking their blood pressure at the beginning and end of class, taking their heart rate during each of the cardio machines they decide to do, leading the class in a active warm up, and then leading the class in resistance exercises at the end of the cardio portion. I also had the opportunity to to teach the Women on Weights fitness class, do weekly wellness Wednesday's presentations to the classes, and even got to attend a health fair as a recruiter for Story Medical.

I accomplished...
After my last 4 and a half months at Story Medical the greatest accomplishment from my experience was that I got to do a lot of hands-on learning and got to jump right into working with the patients after only a few weeks there. I was able to teach and co-teach many classes that helped me grow my overall experience since I got to do many different aspects of my internship. Since I got to do so many aspects I can confidently say I can accomplish an accurate blood pressure, accurately hook patients up to EKG monitors, and make an exercise prescription for any of our patients depending on their medical history.

I learned...
I learned many lessons from my time here because I was lucky enough to start working here part-time last fall. Since I was able to start earlier than most, I was lucky enough to grow relationships with patients. I learned that they depend on you and want you to be there for them and help them even if that means just talking to them about their life. I also learned that in this field it can be difficult because we are working with more of an older population that they could be going through different medical complications but we are they ones they are happy to see because they know what we are doing with them will help them get healthier.

Advice for others...
My advice for future students is to get yourself out there and meeting people in the field that you want to work with which will help you get a future job or internship because you have already started getting your foot in the door. I would also like to say that start building your communication and social skills because in the healthcare field you are meeting a lot of people and want to be able to remember each and every one since they depend on you. In the end be passionate about what you do and enjoy everything you get to do even if its not the dream job.
