I was responsible for...
Cared for phase 1, 2, and 3 cardiac rehab patients. Education to phase 1 patients about A&P of the heart, pre-op/post-op procedures, exercise at home and in hospital. Take Resting, exercising, and recovery blood pressures and heart rates. Applied heart monitors to phase 2 patients. Assisted with set up of all equipment/ensure safety on equipment. Assisted with warm-up/cool down exercises and hand weights. Documented information about patients in records in charts and on the computer. Read EKG strips and measured each phase 2 patient's strip with discharge of the session.
Created and implemented a Ragbrai competition for all patients at cardiac rehab. The competition was done over the month of July, and really motivated the patients to push themselves to achieve higher distances during their sessions. Presented to cardiac rehab employees a presentation of the energy systems during exercise. Assisted in running a lunch and learn event with cardiac patients.
How to talk to patients in a professional, yet nice manner by not getting too personal, but talking about important things. How different hospitals are than anywhere I have ever worked. How each patient is completely different, no matter if they had the same procedure, they react differently and need different precautions.
Advice for others...
Expect the unexpected when working in a hospital, you never know what will happen so be prepared for anything. Know EKG readings well, so take a class on it or get books and read how to do it. Know the anatomy and physiology of the heart and the diseases that affect the heart. Know the medications for cholesterol, blood pressure, and the heart.
