I was responsible for...
Transition from observing the classroom setting to the role of full time teacher. Duties included all aspects of a full time teacher such as; maintenance of student grades, recess duties, lunch assistance, staff meetings, etc.
The greatest accomplishment for me was the ability to co-lead the designing of the new blacktop paint designs at Nevada Central Elementary school in Nevada, Iowa. I sketches several different designs with appropriate measurements, communicated with staff members and students for inout, and mapped out where they would go through the use of satellite imaging techniques.
The greatest lesson that I learned form my experience is that during the weekend, a student may look forward to Monday just to be able to interact with me, or any other teacher for that matter. School may be the safest, most comfortable place that they know. That possibility alone gives me the motivation to perform as effectively and creatively as possible.
Advice for others...
When you get to your placement, get to know everyone. This means your cooperating teacher, the other staff members, the students, and especially the custodians (they have access to just about everything you will ever need). And with the student component, be sure to build that rapport. That will solidify their trust and respect for you and will ultimately make your time there much more enjoyable and meaningful.
