I was responsible for...
During my time at Edgewater, I was responsible for: • instructing weekly strength and stability classes on both land and water • administering fitness assessments on the residents • planning, implementing, and evaluate a variety of exercise programs (incentive programs, exercise programs/classes, events trips, etc.) • create marketing materials to promote exercise programs • delivering presentations about improving one's overall health and well-being.

I accomplished...
I had the privilege of many opportunities at Edgewater. I was able to create and implement an exercise incentive program for the residents. I was also fortunate enough to be able to assist another intern in planning, organizing, and executing a large event for the residents (WesleyLife Olympics).

My most valuable effort...
The most valuable project I worked on was the exercise incentive program I implemented. During the time the program was going on, overall exercise and physical activity minutes increased compared to previous months. It was nice to help others reach the recommended amount of exercise each week.

I learned...
I learned that connecting with individuals on a personal level goes a long ways. It is easy just think of individuals as only clients or participants, but making an effort to get to know them can make or break your chances at success.

I will never forget...
My most memorable experience was observing how the residents responded to the incentive program I implemented. They seemed to really enjoy it, and it turned out to be a success.

A surprising discovery...
I was surprised with how much I connected with the residents. Prior to this internship, I had a general idea of what I wanted to do, but working with this population has really opened my eyes. I genuinely enjoyed working with the residents, and it will be a great experience to look back on in the future if I find myself working with a similar group of individuals.

Advice for others...
My advice to future students is to not be afraid of leaving your comfort zone. It is easy to just sit back and carry out familiar tasks/activities but exposing yourself to new opportunities and experiences will have an invaluable impact on you.

I first learned about this career-building experience from...
I came across this opportunity via email from an Iowa State University instructor.

I landed this assignment by...
I was fortunate enough to be offered this internship because of prior experiences which helped illustrate my skill sets on resume.

I wanted this experience because...
I chose to pursue this internship opportunity because I felt it offered a plethora of opportunities to help make me more marketable. Plus, interacting with all of the residents was special. They are wonderful people, and I am truly glad I had the privilege of working with them.
