I was responsible for...
Over the course of the summer, I was responsible for a number of tasks and duties, all which were different areas of community health. One of the larger projects that I helped contribute to was the Adam Ezra Concert. This benefit concert helped to support renovation costs for the new gym space that SPIRIT Club is currently moving into. I was responsible for reaching out to potential sponsors, food vendors, local restaurants and organizations for raffle items, creating flyers and promoting the event around the community.

I accomplished...
By the end of my internship I was able to decide that I wanted to pursue Personal Training. After working at this fitness club, it became clear to me that I wanted to help people get healthier more directly, rather than work from a programming perspective within community health.

My most valuable effort...
My most valuable effort at SPIRIT Club this summer was connecting with the individuals and employees. Out of everything that I accomplished this summer, the relationships that I formed at this organization mean more to me than any completion of a project. My efforts with SPIRIT Club ranged from helping connect SPIRIT Club to other organizations that work with disabilities, and promoting fundraisers such as the Adam Ezra Concert and the Spirit Club Foundation Scholarship Party. All were great successes for SPIRIT Club and myself, but the relationships that I formed were the most valuable.

I learned...
I learned that a test score does not necessarily correlate to how well you will do in a professional setting, but it is your ability to connect with people that will get you noticed.

I will never forget...
The Adam Ezra Concert was a memorable experience for me. I will never forget dancing to the band with SPIRIT Club members and seeing how happy everyone was to be there.

Advice for others...
I would search for internships beyond your intended distance. Maryland was never on my radar in terms of searching for internships/jobs, but it turned out to be the best option for my field of interest. You never know who you will connect with best, even if the organization is over 1,000 miles from home.

I first learned about this career-building experience from...
I discovered SPIRIT Club through an agency called Dream Careers. Dream Careers is an organization that works with students one on one to seek out internships that fit the needs of their interests and degree.

I wanted this experience because...
When I was first told about SPIRIT Club, I Googled their name and checked out their website. After being on the website for 5 minutes and seeing all of the important and unique work being done, I was sold. It was one of those instances where I knew that I could be a great addition to their team because I truly believed in the mission they were out to achieve. After being at SPIRIT Club for over 2 months, I am sad to leave, but eager to be back next year.
