The goals of the learning community are to teach strategies for academic success, to foster career exploration and to help new students make a successful transition to Iowa State. The introductory classes in Kinesiology are designed to guide students as they explore career paths and make important decisions about their future. As a member of a learning community, you will have the opportunity to get to know faculty, upper level students, and other new students. There will be academic support, service-learning opportunities, and an introduction to campus activities to encourage you to practice career related skills.
Students in the learning community take classes together and work with upper level students called peer mentors, who help them become familiar with the Kinesiology Department and campus resources. Students will meet the faculty and see the entire field of Kinesiology as they learn about potential career directions. The learning community class offers hands-on learning through field trips, campus activities and service-learning activities with plenty of self-reflection. Sections of English are designated for Kinesiology students and focus on topics related to health, fitness and sports.
Service-learning enhances learning outcomes by reaching beyond the classroom. It gives opportunities for interaction and experience within the community, giving students real settings to practice their future careers. Service learning gives the students opportunities for leadership development, directional career steering, community interaction, personal development, and promotes and fosters learning outside of the classroom.
Becoming a successful student involves more than attending classes and the learning community will encourage you take advantage of the many opportunities that are available at Iowa State.
