Teaching I have taught seven Health Studies courses at the undergraduate level and taught two Honors Program seminars. I currently specialize in teaching the Elementary and Secondary Health Education methods courses, and the Administration of the School Health Program class. I have taught Personal Health, First Aid and Emergency Care and the Instructor's course, Human Diseases, Drug Education and a graduate Substance Abuse class. Administrative Duties Coordinate the Community and Public Health Option and the School Health Education Endorsement, as well as the Health Education Area of Specialization for Elementary Education majors. I supervise the interns in CH/PH and the student teachers getting their Health Teaching License. I coordinate all aspects of the ISU Health Studies Program. Research Interests My research interest is associated with Substance Abuse Education for school aged populations. I also have interest in "at-risk" children, especially those in the middle school populations, and emphasizing strategies on how schools can identify students associated with certain risks and try to prevent problems such as: drugs and alcohol use, adolescent sexual activity, bullying and many other types of risky behaviors. I have presented research findings on K-12 prevention/intervention and education issues. Service/Outreach/Professional Activity Recently I have been active in the development of the Iowa Chapter of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) and have been past President of the Iowa Coalition for Comprehensive School Health (ICCSH). I also was VP for Health Education in Iowa (IAHPERD). I advise the students in Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Health Education Honorary Society at ISU and was the advisor of the ISU American Red Cross Club and the ISU Tennis Club. I have conducted over sixty local health Fairs in elementary schools and have made presentations in state workshops and national conferences. I annually serve on the National Public Health Week sub-committee for the Iowa Department of Public Health. I also have supervised two Honors Program trips, taking eleven students to Peru and visited Machu Picchu and lived in the Amazon River Basin while studying ethno-botanical drugs extracted from the Amazon Forest. I have received various faculty awards and recognitions from the university and the Greek community. Personal Interests Travel, golf, tennis children and my grandkids |
