Research Interests I have largely clinical research interests. They are focused on the cardiovascular system and centered are 1) the relationship between the law enforcement profession and cardiovascular disease and 2) blood pressure regulation. Research on the former is currently funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (NIOSH) and is focused on the biological link between job-related stress and cardiovascular disease. My past research on blood regulation has primarily centered around mechanisms by which different populations counter severe orthostatic challenges. To date, I've published over 40 peer-reviewed research papers, over 60 abstract/professional presentations, and generated over $1.2 million in external funding as PI. Teaching My primary teaching responsibilities related to undergraduate and graduate courses focused on how to perform fitness and CVD risk assessments and exercise prescription (i.e., ExSp 458, HHP 558). I also teach the cardiovascular component of a graduate physiology course (HHP 552). I have advised 3 Ph.D. students (currently employed at Southern Illinois University, University of Iowa, and MIT) and 21 Master's students. Service/Outreach/Professional Activity I have been extremely active in the area of public service/outreach. For example, I have given over 50 professional presentations to lay audiences, serve as a consultant to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, and consulted for the Federal Department of Justice. I direct The Exercise Clinic at ISU, an on-campus adult fitness facility and, from 2004-2007, served as the Director of Graduate Education for the Department when it was known as Health and Human Performance. I am a member of ISU's Gerontology Advisory Committee and am a reviewer for several scholarly journals. Personal Interests My family, Scouting, gardening |
