First: Select
a faculty mentor
The prospective student should initiate
a dialog with one or more of the graduate faculty in our department
to find out about compatible interests and research directions. It is
critical that a faculty mentor be identified who has expressed a
willingness to work with the prospective student should the student be
accepted into the program.
Second: Complete the Graduate College Application and Department Information Sheet
1.
Graduate College Application (US) OR Graduate College Application (International)
The application for admission
into the ISU Graduate College may be obtained from the internet.
This application packet will require 1) completed application
form, 2) application fee, 3) transcripts of previous degree
coursework, and 4) submission of recent GRE scores. For international
applicants, the application packet also needs to include 5)
official TOEFL scores and 6) a financial statement.
2. Department Information Sheet
In addition to application to the Graduate College, prospective
students must also fill out the Department Information Sheet for
admission in the Ph.D. program. This Information Sheet serves as pre-screening
tool for the department to use in making recommendations for
admission. The materials should include (1) completed Information Sheet indicating
academic achievement (GPA and GRE scores), (2) proposed faculty mentor, (3) three
letters of recommendation, preferably one from proposed mentor, and (4) a statement
of intent to describe the applicant's rationale for pursuing the advanced
degree.
Third: Complete the Graduate Assistantship Application
Fourth: Wait for Department of Kinesiology notification.
Once the application materials have been received, they will be compiled
into a packet for review by faculty in the Department. Faculty are asked to
evaluate each applicant using all the information available, including transcripts,
GRE scores, TOEFL scores (if applicable), letters of recommendation, the applicant's
statement of purpose, and the curriculum vitae or resume'. The relative weight given
to each of these components varies by faculty member. However, applications will be
rejected outright if the prospective student has not identified a faculty member who
has agreed to mentor the prospective student. In addition, it is expected that Ph.D.
students have strong potential for academic success as reflected by grade point averages
well above 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) on previous coursework, GRE scores of at least 1000
(with both Verbal and Quantitative scores above 500) and a GRE Analytical score of 4.5
or better.
