The Dance Program

The Dance Program at Iowa State University is open to all students, regardless of major. This non-audition program offers a unique opportunity for students to discover and develop their dance talents. By gaining a comprehensive view of dance as a physical skill and creative movement form, students are prepared for interesting and creative careers in dance or taught to augment other career choices through holistic movement experiences.

The Iowa State Dance Program combines physical and rhythmic training with imaginative,
creative and intellectual challenges. The program promotes Dance as a multifaceted discipline and provides dance events and experiences for the students, the university, the community and the state.

Housed in the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) within the College of Human Sciences, the program includes exciting movement courses and offers a Dance Minor or a General Studies program (with a dance emphasis) through HHP. Close collaborative relationships also exist between the Dance Program and the ISU Department of Music and Programs in Theatre. A degree in Performing Arts is offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences under the auspices of the Department of Music. Students may select an emphasis in Dance, Acting/Directing or Theatrical Design. A minor in Performing Arts is also available.

Dance has an important and distinctive contribution to make to the general education of all students by providing expressive, recreational, therapeutic, socially and physically beneficial experiences. Dance classes range from the lecture format of Dance Appreciation and Dance History and Philosophy to the activity format of beginning to advanced levels of ballet, modern, jazz, tap and recreational dance forms. Also featured in the curriculum are the creative and pedagological formats of Dance Composition and several teaching methods classes. All courses are open to students in all majors as supportive education, self discovery, exercise, fun and relaxation.

There are a number of awards and scholarships specifically for dancers. Please contact Cindy Frederickson at (515) 294-7092 for more information about these awards and scholarships.
