I was responsible for...
For the 10 weeks, I was interning I spent the first five in the out-patient clinic monitoring patients when they came in for the exercise class. Here I was responsible for 2-3 patients at a time and filled out information on their charts about their progress and health while exercising at our clinic. The second five weeks were spent on the inpatient cardiac floor in the hospital working with patients who had just come out of surgery. I was responsible for walking patients and monitoring their vitals during these short exercise times, as well as filling out information on their chart.

I accomplished...
I was able to learn a lot about telemetry and heart rhythms as well as medications and heart procedures that are reasons for going to cardiac rehab programs.

My most valuable effort...
I did not really work on any projects but the work I did do was very valuable to me because I was able to see how much of an impact I can make on someone with just having a positive attitude.

I learned...
I think in the last few weeks of the internship I became more confident in myself that I did actually know what I was talking about and if a patient had a question I was able to answer it from my knowledge and did not need to as a nurse to help me find the answer. This helped me to feel I was learning and that I had the confidence to do the job.

I will never forget...
It is not a single moment but rather the community that was built between me and the other employees as well as the patients in Cardiac Rehab.

A surprising discovery...
Something that surprised me was how much down time there was. I was expecting it to be constantly busy but I found that there were several times where there were chances to relax. On the other extremes there were times when it was very very busy.

Advice for others...
Come in with and open mind and a positive attitude. It's crazy how much your attitude and mindset towards something can entirely change your perspective and others' perspective of you.

I first learned about this career-building experience from...
For KIN 345 we had to tour different fitness field locations and this was a place I choose to tour. I immediately knew that this is where I wanted to intern.

I landed this assignment by...
I contacted Ruth Gassmann directly and asked about any openings for an internship with their Cardiac Rehab program and she offered an interview I accepted the position at the end of the interview.

I wanted this experience because...
I enjoy working with people and especially when I have the impact to help them reach a goal to improve their well-being.
