I was responsible for...
Duties that I completed during the internship are; exercise assessment and prescription for normal and special populations, implementation of the program with the patient, health coaching and motivation for clients, body composition testing and analysis using bioelectric impedance analysis, teaching basic health and wellness classes in person, community outreach events, collaborating with other fitness professionals in the area for events and cross-promotions, education at group medical visits, Facebook posting, contribution to PrimeLife weekly newsletter, marketing duties, and accurate and timely recordkeeping.

I accomplished...
A few of the things that I accomplished during my time at PrimeLife are; working with an obese population of people and helping them make life changes so they were better able to lose weight and be healthier. I also helped teach a fitness workshop where I educated individuals on the correct ways to exercise.

My most valuable effort...
I worked with one individual was was extremely obese and was not very active. During his time working with me, we worked on his functional fitness and we worked on improving his general fitness. It was very valuable because he is more active now that he has been in many years and he is more determined about improving his fitness level and his health than he ever has been before.

I learned...
The most valuable thing that I have learned during this experience is how to work with a wide variety of people with different needs. Every person that I worked with had a different level of fitness and they all had to be treated differently and responded to different forms of encouragement. So, it was very valuable to learn how to read the people that you are working with so that you can provide them with the support that they need in the way that they need it.

I will never forget...
The most memorable experience that I have from my internship is teaching a fitness workshop. Getting up in front of a group of people and teaching them about fitness and how to exercise correctly was a great experience because these people have read all kinds of misinformation on the internet and see all of these extravagant exercises that they will never be able to do and they get discouraged quickly. So, it was very fulfilling teaching them that exercise isn't scary and it is something that anyone can do.

A surprising discovery...
I was really surprised that I enjoyed working with special populations as much as I have. People who are obese, overweight, or have some health condition are so thankful that you are taking time to help them get healthy and they are very willing to listen and to do their best. I will most likely seek a job where I can work with people in a special population because of how much I enjoyed working with my clients.

Advice for others...
The biggest piece of advice that I could offer is for people to keep an open mind about who you may work with. There are a lot of people out there who are looking for help and who want to change how they are living their life. Only working with athletes or people who know about exercise and how to exercise, for me, wasn't as gratifying as helping someone who really needed the help to get their lives back on track.

I first learned about this career-building experience from...
I learned about this opportunity from an email that I received from one of my professors. The employer was looking for someone who had experience in the exercise field and was eager to work with a wide variety of people.

I landed this assignment by...
I landed this assignment by getting in touch with the employer as soon as I was able to. I sent her an email the same day that I received the email from my professor and set up an interview.

I wanted this experience because...
I wanted this assignment because it was an opportunity to learn about the fitness industry and was going to allow me to work with a wide variety of people who are desperately looking for help to live a healthier life and just don't know where to start.
