I was responsible for...
Since I was working with two different programs, I had a variety of responsibilities. With the Title V program, I had responsibilities dealing with bullying prevention. I researched tool kits and data that Iowa Department of Public Health can send out to community partners to help reduce bullying. I was able to create an environmental scan by using a survey that was sent out to our community partners to see what they were doing about bullying and how the Iowa Department of Public Health could help. Within the Adolescent Health program, I had responsibilities regarding adolescent well-visit and grant writing. I have helped be in charge of the adolescent well-visit awareness campaign. For the campaign my supervisors and I decided to create a green screen photo booth that will have sayings about well-visits in the pictures. I created the slogan and tagline for the campaign along with props for the photo booth. The photo booth was at the high school state tournaments where staff members talked to the patrons about adolescent well-visit. Another aspect of the adolescent well-visit that I was responsible for was creating flyers that could be sent to hospitals and local public health agencies. The flyers had information about what an adolescent well-visit is and why it is important to get one. For the Adolescent Health website on the Iowa Department of Public Health’s website, I was in charge of updating and making sure the information is medically and culturally accurate. Lastly, Adolescent Health was filling out an application for a funding opportunity to help expectant and parenting students in community colleges. Therefore, I was put in charge of finding information about pregnancies and community colleges in Iowa and putting that information within the narrative of the application.

I accomplished...
There are many projects that I have accomplished since the beginning of my internship. I have been able to complete an environmental scan of what organization in Iowa are doing regarding bullying efforts. Next, I have been able to create an awareness campaign from scratch and come up with the branding and marketing. Also, I have been able to teach myself graphic design and create posters that help promote the adolescent well visit. These posters will be sent out to organization and hospitals to educate the public. Finally, I have been able to accomplish researching, writing and submitting an application for a funding opportunity to help expectant and parenting students. Overall, I have been able to accomplish many big project along with mini projects that my supervisors have given me over my time at the Iowa Department of Public Health.

I learned...
I learned many aspects about public health at the state level such as funding, research and professional writing. One thing that I learned that I didn’t think I was going to is graph design. I was in charge of creating posters that could be sent out to hospitals and local public health agencies. I have no previous experience with graphic design and I am not creative at all. After many days and plenty of trial and errors I was able to teach myself design techniques and create five posters for the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Advice for others...
My advice for others is don’t be afraid to speak up. If I didn’t voice my opinions or ideas, I wouldn’t have been able to create an awareness campaign or help write a grant.
