DMU Researcher Discusses
Exercise and Cardiovascular Function

Dr. Julia Moffitt from the Dept of Physiology and Pharmacology at Des Moines University in Des Moines, Iowa, visited the Kinesiology Department at Iowa State on February 20.  Her research presentation, entitled "The Neurocardiac Axis in Health and Disease” was followed by a reception in the Graduate Student Lounge.  The presentation was arranged and hosted by Dr. Amy Welch, Assistant Professor in Kinesiology.

Dr. Moffitt focuses her investigation on neural control and autonomic regulation of cardiovascular function. Her ongoing projects include studying the effects of vagus nerve stimulation on the control of cardiovascular function and behavior in addition to investigating the effects of chronic exercise training and deconditioning on the central nervous system control of cardiovascular function and hedonic behaviors.

Following the presentation, Dr. Welch said, "I was very pleased that Dr. Moffitt agreed to
present her truly interdisciplinary research to us. She had some fascinating findings to share
that were of great interest to a wide range of faculty and students in our department, and her presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by all."

Fighting Sexual Assault

Kinesiology student group Eta Sigma Gamma teamed up with the Thielen Student Health Center and the Committee on Lectures to fight sexual assault on April 8.  Eta Sigma Gamma hosted a workshop with Grand Master Yong Chin Pak teaching self-defense and Ray Rodriguez presenting tips to prevent sexual assault.  Over 150 people attended the workshop and the event was well covered by the Iowa State Daily.  Eta Sigma Gamma is the Iowa State chapter of a national health honorary.

Grand Master Pak, who has taught martial arts at Iowa State for over 30 years, demonstrated a series of self-defense moves and later invited students to break boards as a way to practice the techniques.  Ray Rodriguez works with the Students 2 Students Peer Education Program, which provides health outreach and prepares students to provide education to their peers.  He provided information and prevention tips to help students avoid situations with the potential for sexual assault.

Eta Sigma Gamma president, Alex Moore, and faculty advisor, Dr. Frank Schabel were well pleased with the attendance and the quality of the presentation.  Ms. Moore’s photo was included in the Daily as she focused on breaking a board with her self-defense moves.  Dr. Schabel said similar workshops had been offered in the past, but attendance this year was far better.
