New Lecturers in Kinesiology

Jennifer Spry-Knutson

Jennifer Spry-Knutson is lecturing this fall for Health Studies 110. She is also a faculty member at Des Moines Area Community College, where she currently serves as the Chair for Fitness and Sports Management.

Spry-Knutson graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1990 and from University of Iowa in 1995 with her master’s degree. “My past work experience has led my many opportunities to work in a variety of facets in our field,” said Spry-Knutson.

In her spare time she works with Mary Greeley - Story City Ambulance, Red Cross as an Instructor Trainer, and the American Heart Association as an instructor. “My hobbies are spending time with my two children (Kaylee – 10 & Kole - 4), practicing yoga, reading, exercising and quilting, “ says Spry-Knutson.

Tyanez Jones

Tyanez Jones is a new lecturer in the department with the primary work responsibility of teaching EXSP 458, The Principles of Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription. Dr. Warren Franke typically teaches 458 but is focusing on his research this semester, which gives Jones the opportunity to teach this important class. “This is an absolutely fun time,” says Jones. “Having the opportunity to teach a course I took as an undergraduate and probably in the same classroom is great.” Jones will also supervise health and fitness management students during their internships.

Ms. Jones attended ISU as an undergraduate and earned her degree in exercise and sport science with a minor in African American Studies. She went on to earn a graduate degree (MA) from East Tennessee State University with a concentration in exercise physiology. Her research compared black and white elderly women on bone mineral density, muscle mass, and balance.

Ms. Jones and her family moved to Ames three years ago from the great state of Tennessee where they were surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains, which has taken some adjustment. When asked about hobbies and interests, Ms. Jones replied, “My family is my greatest interest and focus at this time. However, my hobbies are included in my daily life. They include exercising, reading, writing, teaching, and singing.”
