Hello Alums and Friends,

I hope you like the idea that we are producing the e-Clipboard more often. Two of our staff, Carol Cordell—undergraduate advisor and Pat Mize—secretary, work hard on collecting information and producing the newsletter. We do appreciate their contributions.

You may already know that the name change from the Department of Health and Human Performance to the Department of Kinesiology occurred officially on July 1st. At the September 18-19, 2007, Iowa Board of Regents meeting, our degree name changes were also approved to: B.S. in Kinesiology and Health, M.S. in Kinesiology, and Ph.D. in Kinesiology. These changes line us up much better with national trends in our field.

Our enrollment continues to be strong with over 750 undergraduate majors, about 25 M.S. students, and 14 Ph.D. students. Our undergraduates received a number of the major awards in the College of Human Sciences last spring. We have now graduated 8 students from our Ph.D. program that began in 1999 and all have been placed in good positions.

Faculty and staff continue to work hard to obtain external funding (over $4 million last year, 1st time our external funding has ever exceeded our departmental budget for the same year), publish and present their work, teach effectively and help students learn, and provide outreach and service to many groups. Our alums and friends can be proud of our faculty. They are truly an excellent group of people.

Finally, this is my last year as Chair and Professor as I will retire in June of 2008. I’ve enjoyed my 10 years in this role and I’m pleased with the changes that have occurred and the growth we have seen. ISU will be conducting a national search for a new Chair and I’m certain we will obtain a person who will continue the upward trajectory of the Department.

We always appreciate your support,

Jerry R. Thomas, Ed.D.

Chair and Professor
