Memorial Garden To Be Dedicated to Paula Gmelch

Paula Gmelch

The Paula Cowgill Gmelch Memorial Garden will be established in the courtyard of Lagomarcino Hall as a tribute to a woman who served Iowa State with kindness, passion, and poise. Paula was a friend to countless students, alumni and colleagues and the wife of Walt Gmelch, who served as Dean of the College of Education from 1998 until 2004. Paula's life was cut short tragically in a car-pedestrian accident in San Francisco earlier this year. A favorite retreat of many Iowa Staters, the Lagomarcino courtyard envelops the "Enlightenment" mural, made possible in part by Paula's advocacy. Like Paula herself, the memorial garden will embrace guests warmly and gently.

“I encourage you to contribute to the Paula Gmelch Memorial Garden that will be located in the center of the Lagomarcino Courtyard,” says Jerry Thomas, Chair of the Department of Kinesiology. “Walt will be here on September 14th to dedicate the garden. As you are aware, Walt and Paula were great supporters and friends of Kinesiology.”

To contribute to the Paula Cowgill Gmelch Memorial Garden fund, send a check made out to the ISU Foundation (note it is for the Paula Gmelch Garden) to Carol Thorson, 38 McKay Hall, ISU, Ames, IA 50011 or email Carol Thorson, cthorson@iastate.edu, or call her at 515 294-5954.

Students Travel to Malaysia & Singapore

Dr. Rich Engelhorn
Cindy Frederickson

Dr. Rich Engelhorn, Associate Professor in Kinesiology, and Cindy Frederickson, Academic Adviser, recently took nine students to study sport and culture in Malaysia and Singapore. Participants in this cultural endeavor included: Steven Dillavou, Brianna Morrison, Robbie Cooper, Brian Tveter, Taylor Griffin, Ashley Werner, Lindsey Schoon, Jill Palen and Amber Jonas.

Dr. Engelhorn has sponsored similar study trips in the past and yet each experience brings new insights and learning opportunities. Highlights of this trip included visits to local schools, the National Sports Complex, two universities, the Olympic Council of Malaysia, the Malaysian Basketball Association, beaches, rainforests, caves and more. Not only were students able to watch and learn about traditional Asian sports and education, they also had opportunities to participate. Students tried their hand at cricket, played American flag football with their Malaysian hosts, worked with children in the classroom, and ate an endless variety of traditional foods.
