Outstanding Kinesiology Students Shine at
Spring Graduation Ceremonies

Carolyn Siskoff, and April Hoffmeyer played key roles during recent graduation ceremonies and demonstrated the superb quality of students in Kinesiology. Carolyn Siskoff, a graduating senior in Kinesiology from Davenport, Iowa, led the procession as the student marshal in the College of Human Sciences graduation celebration. During her college career, Carolyn provided leadership for the Women in Science and Engineering program, served as president of the Pre-Physical Therapy Club, and led a team for Destination Iowa State. She volunteered at the Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Center at Iowa State, the Mary Greeley Physical Therapy Clinic in Ames, and the Genesis West Medical Center in Davenport.

April Hoffmeyer, a senior in Kinesiology and a native of Sioux City, Iowa, was selected to represent the College of Human Sciences as its student marshal at the University’s spring commencement. April was selected because of her “well-rounded accomplishments, including excellent grades, honors project, extensive high-quality service, professional activities, and character”, according to Jackie Blount, Associate Dean of the College of Human Sciences. As student marshal, April carried the banner for the College of Human Sciences at the university commencement ceremony in Hilton Coliseum on May 5th. CHS Dean, Cheryl Achterberg, introduced April at the university ceremony and made a few comments about her many accomplishments. April was also asked todeliver a brief speech on behalf of all graduating students at the college commencement ceremony on May 4th. April graduated with distinction, completed the Honors Program and is a member of a number of honor societies. While at Iowa State, she served on the Human Sciences Student Council, organized more than 15 events to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network, and mentored students on current issues and concerns, through the GRIP program. She worked as a student assistant for the Cyclone Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Clinic and served as both a Cyclone Aide and a Student Ambassador. Dan Determan, incoming president of the Human Sciences Student Council, also presented April with the very first CHS Graduating Student of the Year award during the College graduation ceremony.

Kinesiology was honored to have such wonderful students representing the department during graduation ceremonies. They have both served the department, college and university very well during the college careers. We look forward to hearing about their future successes.

Exemplary Peer Mentor Award Winners

The University recognized two Kinesiology Peer Mentors as “exemplary” this spring. Dawn Caffrey, received the award as a “returning mentor” and Kathleen Houston was selected as one of the winners in the “class-affiliated mentor” category. There are over 150 mentors working with learning communities across campus. Seventeen exemplary mentors were selected for recognition. This is the sixth year that the awards have been given. “Both of them have done a fine job. They made a difference with the new Kinesiology majors in helping them to understand our Department and ISU,” says Dr. Jerry Thomas, Department Chair. Kathleen graduated in May with a B.S. in the community and public health option and Dawn will complete her internship in health & fitness management this summer and graduate in August. Congratulations Dawn and Kathleen!
