Students Choose HHP to Prepare for Medical Careers
Over 230 students have found exercise science, the fastest growing option within the HHP major at Iowa State. Long recognized as an excellent preparation for physical therapy careers, HHP has become the major of choice for students going on to physical therapy graduate programs from the Iowa State campus. As students head into registration for fall classes, 137 HHP students are listed as exercise science, pre-physical therapy and another eight students are planning for occupational therapy careers.
Dr. Ann Smiley-Oyen, HHP faculty member, says, “Our program provides undergraduates the opportunity to thoroughly study factors related to human movement, for example, how movement is controlled and measured, the mechanisms underlying the effect of exercise on the body, what does and does not motivate people to exercise, how the brain controls movement, what muscles work together to flex or extend a specific limb, etc. In other words, physical and occupational therapists work with people through movement, and our curriculum is all about the study of movement, thus it provides a solid foundation for these professional programs.”

Dr. Ann Smiley-Oyen
The biggest surprise, however, is in the rapid growth of students preparing for medical school and physician’s assistant graduate programs. About 40 students are preparing for medical school and another 13 are listed in the HHP exercise science, pre-physician’s assistant option. Students who are planning careers in medicine focused on what is happening at the cellular level within the human body, such as medical research or genetics, still primarily choose majors more linked to biology or chemistry. Other students, however, like the applied nature of HHP classes. With the newly expanded labs in the Forker Building, students have many opportunities to engage in health related research with the faculty. Students still take all of the recommended science courses for medical school and have the added benefit of courses that explore the effect of exercise on health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. |

Renovation of Human Performance Laboratories Complete
With a renovation of about 6000 square feet on the first floor of the Forker Building, a unified set of Human Performance Laboratories has been created. The newly renovated space connects with about 4000 square feet of previous individual lab to create the Human Performance Laboratories. The renovated space now includes an undergraduate teaching lab, conference room, and office space as well as individual labs in applied motor development, exercise biochemistry, exercise physiology, exercise psychology, health promotion and exercise, hemodynamics, molecular exercise physiology, motor control/learning, and pediatric exercise science. One of the more unique labs is the new environmental testing chamber in the Exercise Metabolism Laboratory, which is a sealed room equipped to control temperature and humidity.
