New Grant Money for Expanded Research

Dr. Warren Franke received a $360,805 award from the Center for Disease Control for his study, Stress Cytokines and Heart Disease in Police. Law enforcement officers have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) than the general population, which cannot be explained by an excess of conventional risk factors. CVD is an inflammatory disease and several aspects of the law enforcement profession, e.g. job-related stress, can affect inflammatory mediators. The objective of this project is to test the hypothesis that officers have a higher risk of CVD due to untoward alterations in pro- and anti-atherogenic inflammatory mediators, which are associated with job-related stress. Once completed, this project should increase our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of CVD in this high stress occupation and lead to effective interventions to reduce the prevalence of this disease.

Dr. Marion Kohut received a $2,582,768 grant from the Department of Health & Human Services - Public Health Service to study how exercise can strengthen the immune system in an elderly population. Her investigative team will use aged mice and infect them with influenza virus to examine how exercise improves the body’s ability to respond to stressors such as infection and how exercise modulates immunity to reduce the severity of the infection. Understanding how exercise can minimize the severity of influenza in older adults and make them less susceptible to other chronic diseases are goals of the study. The research team includes members with expertise in virology, immunology, pathology and molecular biology.
